UCM move into the Far East

In the face of world economic slowdown the heating element market experienced further weakening in demand during second half 2001. This is reflected in lower magnesia sales (down 9%) which was responsible for the decline in the group total. However a restructuring of the market is continuing and this is providing good opportunities for the UCM magnesia operations to consolidate its leading market position. With manufacturing progressively moving to Asia and the Far East UCM has established a presence in China. This will produce important benefits from 2003 onwards.
